EAST London and King Williams Town are among several areas earmarked by the Eastern Cape Department of Education as part of the "Connect Eastern Cape" campaign to provide computer skills to school pupils.
The "Connect Eastern Cape" schools campaign, run by the government in partnership with other organisations and businesses, aims to provide needy schools with computers and access to the Internet.
According to Education MEC Nomsa Jajula, pupils in 150 under-developed schools in the Eastern Cape will be given a chance to acquire computer skills this year as part of the campaign.
Jajula made this announcment recently while handing over 11 computers to the Ernest Skosana High School in Port Elizabeth.
Responding to a call by Eastern Cape Premier Makhenkesi Stofile to businesses, community organisations and individuals to be part of a people's contract programme launched last November, the South African Revenue Services has donated more than 400 personal computers for use in schools around the Eastern Cape.
In addition to support received so far, the MEC urged other companies to get on board "in the spirit of building a people's contract to help the province realise her vision of an Eastern Cape that is a compelling place in which to live, work and invest".
Other areas that will benefit from the project include Cala, Sterkspruit, Umtata, Elliotdale and Uitenhage.
