Councillors get 6% salary increment

December 22, 2004

By Matome Sebelebele

AUTHORITIES gazetted a six percent salary increment backdated to 1 July for the country's councillors. The deal was concluded by Provincial and Local Government Minister Sydney Mufamadi.

This calls for municipal councils to pass a resolution, in consultation with respective local government MECs, calling for the implementation of the new provision.

This would probably be effected in the New Year as some councils were closed for the festive season.

The increment follows a seven percent salary increase proposal by the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers and later, President Thabo Mbeki proclaimed last month, for a six percent increment in this regard.

Provincial and Local Government Minister Sydney Mufamadi concluded the deal yesterday with publication in the Government Gazette, in terms of section 7 of the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers Act of 1998.

The increment also makes provision for cellphone and telephone allowances, as well as for out of pocket expenses.

However, councillors' salaries vary depending on the size and financial muscle of respective councils.
