Community gains from EPWP

March 23, 2005

By Mosidi Mohlakela

Community members within the Mangaung Local Municipality are to be empowered through a learnership on emerging contractors, in line with the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

Through this programme, which will be launched at Botshabelo tomorrow, about 60 individuals will be trained on labour intensive methods in this regard.

The project emanates from interaction between the municipality and community members. Sixty labour intensive projects will therefore be provided as identified by the community.

Spokesperson for the municipality Poelo Ntseki said those selected for the programme had been assisted to form registered enterprises.

"They will be able to bid for the maintenance of low-volume roads and storm-water drains after completing the learnership," Ntseki explained.

She said the objective of the Labour Intensive Emerging Contractor Learnership was to provide work for the people within the municipality and also develop infrastructure in line with the provincial Infrastructure Development Plan (IDP).

The learners will be trained over a period of two years.
