New resolutions to improve service delivery

September 7, 2005

By Themba Gadebe

THE last Cabinet Lekgotla adopted a number of resolutions aimed at accelerating Project Consolidate – a government hands-on approach to strengthen service delivery in municipalities.

Public Service and Administration Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi said the acceleration of this project would be undertaken under the five-key performance areas of local government transformation.

"The resolutions of the Cabinet lekgotla and the lessons of the recent Presidential Imbizo will inform the rollout of additional Presidential Izimbizo and other local launches like the Izimbizo on Project Consolidate Programme of Action.

"A detailed schedule involving Ministers and Deputy Ministers for the remainder of this year's work that will culminate in a national Human Resource Audit of Local Government is going on," she said.

Fraser-Moleketi said the implementation of the Municipal Imbizo Programme was proceeding to reinforce Project Consolidate and would form part of the National Imbizo taking place next moth.

In addition, she said Cabinet had approved a proposal for a government wide monitoring and evaluation system that would collect, collate, analyse, disseminate and apply information on the progress and impact of programmes.

This, she said would also ensure transparency and accountability, and to promote service delivery improvement, compliance with statutory and other requirement and a learning culture in the public sector.
