The people of Ekurhuleni celebrated Women's Month with art and music at the
annual Vuka Basadi Craft Fair on Sunday,13 August.
Organised by the Metro's Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture,
the fair was held at the grounds of the Boksburg Civic Centre from 10am until
2.30pm and was officially opened by Councillor Masontaga Masango.
The Vuka Basadi Craft Fair is one of the city's projects to create employment
by promoting arts and crafts.
Visitors got to see handmade objects, such as ceramic pots, beaded and silver
jewellery, metalworks, fabrics and textiles, woodwork, wirework, quilts, candles,
embroidery and glassware.
Masango paid tribute to the women who were part of the march to Pretoria in
1956.
Entertainment for the day was provided by two female musical groups Cutt Glass
and Afrika Mamas. The groups performed their new production called Amasiko,
doing renditions of hits such as Meadowlands, Circle of Life, Thula thula,
Mama Thembu's Wedding, Shosholoza and others.
Groups performing on the day included marimba, jazz and brass bands from townships
around the city, Indian and high-energy dancers.
