ETHEKWINI
eThekwini housing project for low to mid-income groups

25 January 2007

By Thapelo Sakoana

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Housing and Local Government, Mike Mabuyakhulu, is to launch a groundbreaking social housing project in the eThekwini Metropolitan Council.

The project would ensure that the low and middle income earners are provided with housing units for rental at a nominal rate, with the option to buy at a later stage.

Mr Mabuyakhulu will officiate at the sod turning ceremony of the multi-million rand initiative in Bonella, on the outskirts of Durban on Saturday.

The department of housing and local government said the project was part of its housing policy, aimed at promoting social cohesion among different racial groups.

This initiative is a joint venture between the department, eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality and the National Housing Finance Corporation.

The complete project will comprise of a housing complex with different housing units and have playgrounds for children.

Spokesperson for the department Bheko Madlala told BuaNews that the project would be completed later this year.

The housing project will be fenced and will have one access point under security control.
