The eThekwini Municipality has set aside R15 million to build ablution facilities in the informal settlements within the municipality.
According to the Deputy Head of the municipality's Pollution Control, Siva Chetty, the project is aimed at providing proper sanitation facilities in the informal settlements in eThekwini.
"The project will ensure that informal settlements dwellers live a healthy hygienic life," said Mr Chetty.
It entails erecting communal ablution blocks and purpose-designed containers amongst others.
The project is to curb the spread of diseases, promote a hygienic and healthy lifestyle as well as improving the quality of lives of the people.
Some of the funding for the project was from the Municipal Infrastructure Grant.
In addition, the initiative is one of the Integrated Development Plan principles of service delivery, skills development and empowerment and accountability.
This comes as the country observes annual National Sanitation and Hygiene Week.
The purpose of the campaign is to highlight the work that the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry is doing to ensure that all South Africans have access to sanitation.
Marking the start of the campaign in Msinga on Monday, Water Affairs and Forestry Minister Lindiwe Hendricks said through the Sanitation Week her department aimed to encourage municipalities and communities to prioritise sanitation.
Government is working towards ensuring that everyone has access to appropriate, acceptable, safe and affordable basic sanitation services, she said.
