The award was presented to the city by the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMISA).
Acknowledging the award, the municipality's spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini said over the years, Ekurhuleni has set a high standard for the selection and design of landfill sites to cater for the safe disposal of general wastes.
"Through advance planning, the metro has been able to ensure that well engineered sites are secured to provide sufficient airspace capacity for future disposal requirements," said Dlamini.
The institute found all six of Ekurhuleni's sites to have been so well planned that they did not only meet legal compliance with permit conditions, but also guaranteed minimal impact on the surrounding environment and communities in which they are situated.
The sites include Weltevreden in Brakpan, Rietfontein in Springs, Rooikraal, Simmer and Jack in Germiston, Platkop near Heidelburg and the newest site situated in Zesfontein and Benoni.
The metros' efforts to encourage waste minimisation through recycling and composing were also recognised through this award, which was presented at this year's Landfill Seminar held recently.
"This is a great moment for us as a municipality and we shall continue working hard to maintain the high standard of waste disposal in the region.
"Congratulations are in order for all those who made this possible for Ekurhuleni including the political leadership, senior management and the workers on the ground," an elated Dlamini said.
The Landfill Interest Group awards are pioneered by the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa in an effort to ensure high standards of waste disposal and management of such facilities throughout the country.
