THE Presidency has called for South Africans to nominate persons with various expertise to serve in the National Planning Commission (NPC) headed by Minister Trevor Manuel.

The commissioners selected will serve the commission for a period of five years.

Formed shortly after the new administration took office in May last year, the commission is expected to be the central focus of government's development policy and will guide the country's short and long term development goals.

"We seek the best, brightest minds in our country that can use their sectoral expertise to contribute towards a broad development plan for the country," Manuel said.

Manuel has also released a revised Green Paper that will guide the work of the commission for the next five years. Cabinet approved the release of the document in August last year following extensive public consultations.

The minister said while the NPC would be a permanent structure of government, the commissioners would work on a part time basis and the selection team will focus on individuals who have their day to day jobs.

"We are not looking for a group of retired professors. We want individuals who are experts in several fields on a day to day basis," he said.

President Jacob Zuma is expected to name the 20 commissioners by the end of March.

Nominations close on 10 February and anyone can submit a nomination directly at The Presidency or online.
