Cities are able to attract, retain and develop firms, increase the rate of economic participation, and the quality of life of their residents. Understanding their role in economic development is critical, as cities are drivers of national (and regional) growth.

  • Economic Development in Municipalities: KZN Case Studies: The report synthesises research done within four municipalities in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Province. The project sought to unpack and understand how these municipalities have understood and institutionalised the local government economic development function through an analysis of the organisational structures within each municipality.

  • Informal City Reader ZA. Part of The Rockefeller Foundations’ Informal City Dialogues (IDCs), this book chronicles stories from the informal realm. These stories are a running narrative of the lives of informal workers and settlers in the city, offering a window into the lives of street vendors, waste-pickers, and even home-based beer brewers.
