This programme area considers what it means to create effectively planned human settlements that meet developmental objectives, enhance social cohesion and contribute towards the spatial transformation of the urban built environment.


  • The Beyond Gentrification Report investigates ways in which South African cities and urban development practitioners can move beyond the impacts of gentrification, towards better inclusivity and transformation.
  • Understanding Affordable Housing Markets in South Africa. In order to understand the affordable housing market in South Africa and its potential opportunities for both city governments and the private sector, the South African Cities Network (SACN) partnered with the Centre for Affordable Housing Finance (CAHF) to develop affordable housing profiles for each of its nine member cities.
  • Municipal Housing Forum. The Forum focused on the key considerations for metropolitan housing and planning strategies for the political term following the 2011 South African municipal elections.
  • Slum Upgrade Fieldtrips. Results of the fieldtrips made by Masters students from Wits University Nairobi, Kenya in September 2012.
  • Housing Subsidy Assets Study. This report explored the performance of government subsidised housing in South Africa, specifically the extent to which the housing subsidy programme has translated into a housing asset benefit for beneficiary households.
