Reference Group Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, Political Declaration and MobilisationTHE Local Government Climate Action and Renewable Energy (LG-CARE) Initiative consists of cities and municipalities who are committed to mitigating and adapting to climate change, creating environmentally sustainable municipalities, boosting the renewable energy market, securing future energy supplies, and creating jobs in the green economy. The LG-CARE Initiative is led by the Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Mayor Mekgwe, who is the convener of the SALGA Local Government Climate Change Champions Committee. This committee consists of provincial coordinators who have been nominated for each province, and will function as the political link between the LG-Care Initiative and SALGA. The objectives and programme of the LG-CARE Initiative have been set out in a Political Declaration, which has been agreed in principle between the political leadership of the initial participating cities and municipalities. The draft declaration will be amended based on inputs by the Mayors, circulated to all municipalities along with a communiqué on the outcomes of the meeting, and ultimately taken to the national member’s assembly of SALGA in May 2010. It is hoped that the LG-CARE declaration will be signed at the Green Economy Summit in May 2010. It is hoped that the signatories of this declaration will be expanded to include all fellow Mayors and local government leaders. Through these and other forums it is intended to mobilise political support in order to achieve the objectives of the Initiative. At the same time it is important to promote knowledge sharing, partnering and awareness raising between local governments leaders, particularly around pilot projects.
