Help at hand for
stricken municipalities
National government has stepped in to back up failing municipalities, with a plan to spend R15,6bn over the next two years. Provincial and Local Government Minister Sydney Mufamadi is quoted by Business Day as saying that government would send teams to 132 of SA's 284 municipalities to tackle problems such as billing systems, municipal debt, the provision of free basic services and local economic development.

Govt boosts infrastructure spending
Government has increased social infrastructure spending over the next three years to R1 billion in the form of infrastructure grants to municipalities and provinces, bringing the total Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) allocation to R18.5 billion.

Property owners
'liable for tenant arrears'
The Constitutional Court has ruled that property owners are responsible for the payment of arrears accumulated by their tenants for municipal services, thereby overturning an earlier decision by the Eastern Cape High Court.
