The role of cities as drivers of economic growth has become increasingly important as the world becomes more urbanised. Cities are some of the most important sources of job creation and wealth generation. It is in cities that goods are produced and services are provided that reinforce economic opportunities on a much wider scale.

ITIES have to make plans and decisions about their own growth and investments to make the most of their opportunities.

They also play a major role in fighting poverty.

The South African Cities Network’s Productive Cities programme helps boost economic competitiveness through co-operating with the member cities and various bodies that focus on economic development.

We focus on:

  • Economic growth, via the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (Asgisa) programme;
  • Job creation, via the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP);
  • Increased trade;
  • Infrastructure investment; and
  • Urban-rural linkages.
