Building institutional strength

UR Well-Governed Cities programme monitors just how well South African cities are governed, exploring institutional strength and capacity, financial prudence, urban policy cohesion, administrative efficiency and modernisation.

We provide information and mechanisms that help municipalities and cities set up and maintain integrated, inclusive and pro-active decision-making and monitoring.

We develop strategies to tackle:

  • Public infrastructure investment
  • Municipal asset management
  • Anti-corruption

We conduct regular peer reviews and evaluate the implementation and achievement of national government priorities by each of our members.

Though our research, we are able to offer our members guidelines on tackling various issues of importance to city governance, including:

  • Procurement monitoring;
  • Asset management;
  • Mega-projects;
  • Property development partnerships;
  • Setting up and maintaining City Improvement Districts; and
  • Disaster management

We are able to offer assistance in planning alignment, law and order guidance, and managing labour disputes and disciplinary procedures.
