What we do

Learning from the Urban Renewal Programme

IN 2001, the Urban Renewal Programme (URP) was launched as an intergovernmental initiative to promote area-based interventions in eight urban nodes in order to reduce urban poverty and under-development. With programme management and technical support provided by the Department of Provincial and Local Government (now the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs), the URP has reached the end of its life-span. This report documents the experiences and learning from five of the URP nodes, including the Alexandra Renewal Programme, recently named as a UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour winner in 2009.
