Mayor Mondli Gungubele appoints a new mayoral committee which will put emphasis on the areas of priority for the metro over the five-year term. FOLLOWING his election as executive mayor of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, Mondli Gungubele moved with speed to announce the team that for the next five-year term will help carry forth the vision for the growth and development of the City. In making the announcement, the mayor said he had chosen a calibre of councillors with a demonstrable capacity to lead as a collective, engage constructively and frequently with relevant stakeholders, collaborate amongst themselves for the success of entire metro and ensure integration of work where no single person or department works in isolation. The new mayoral committee has been constituted in such a way that it puts emphasis on the areas of priority for the metro. The Infrastructure Services portfolio has been unbundled into three – Water and Energy; Roads and Stormwater; and Public Transport Planning and Provision, to ensure none of these crucial areas of work suffers when another gets elevated. The Corporate Services portfolio now reports directly to the Executive Mayor and is managed day-to-day by the City Manager because, in the mayor’s own words, “issues of HR, ICT and customer relationship management (amongst others) should not have to be unnecessarily politicised as they talk to the efficiency of the City”. The councillors who will be serving as Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs) for the term of office 2011 to 2016 are:
