ENERGY REFERENCE GROUP

The Energy Reference Group is convened in partnership with Sustainable Energy Africa (SEA) and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and SACN. The partners have been running Urban Energy Network (UEN) Meetings for almost two decades, often in collaboration for input, support and funding with other institutions such as government, not-for-profit organisations and academic institutions active in the South African local government space on energy, as well as specific programmes with a focus on urban energy in South African municipalities.

While the nature of the meetings has changed over time, their essential function remains:

  • To build municipal staff capacity around current sustainable energy issues, e.g. by providing specialist input or practitioner experience detail
  • To enable lessons sharing and mutual solution development and coordination amongst municipalities grappling with similar issues
  • To develop relationships and facilitate information flow between local and national levels of government and other organisations

Members of the Reference Group include managers responsible for electricity, energy policy and planning in SACN member cities, selected secondary cities and some local municipalities.
